BMW N.A. announced a recall of approximately 76,565 2006-2007 BMW vehicles, with specific types of seats equipped with front passenger seat detection mats.

Which BMW models are affected by the recall?

2006: 325i, 325xi, 330i, 330xi sedans and 325xi sports wagons
2007: 328i, 328xi, 335i, 335xi sedans and 328i and 328xi sports wagons
2006-2007: 525i, 525xi, 530i, 530xi, 550i sedans and 530xi sports wagons
2006: 760i sedans
2006-2007: 750i, 750Li, and 760Li sedans
2006: X5 sports activity vehicles.

What causes the possible airbag problem?

The front passenger seats are equipped with an occupant-detection mat, which over time, may crack and deteriorate. The occupant-detection mat tells the airbag system how and when to deploy during a crash. Injury is increased if the mat malfunctions and a crash occurs.

Are there any known accidents attributed to the defect?

At this time, BMW is not aware of any accidents or injuries due to the related problems

What do I do if my car is one of those affected?

BMW will be notifying all owners affected by the recall in January 2014. A new detection mat will replace the old one.
