There’s nothing quite like cruising in your Bimmer with the top-down on a sunny day. It is one of the best things about owning the shark-styled BMW e63/e64 6-series coupe. These sleek cars were sold in the United States from 2004 to 2011 and the convertible was a popular model. Unfortunately, some owners have encountered convertible roof malfunctions.
Owners have said that they will close their top normally at night, but then when they start the car in the morning the dashboard will show an error saying that the convertible top is not locked. They will check the top and find out that it is tight and secure, but the warning still illuminates. This is sometimes accompanied by unresponsive windows that won’t roll up or down, a trunk that does not open, and/or the date and time on the dashboard are reset. If your vehicle is experiencing all of these problems, it could be due to a failing battery. The BMW six-series is known to have a variety of malfunctions occur if the battery is dead or dying.
Another cause of this problem could be a faulty sensor in the top frame. This sensor monitors the angle and rotation of the top and communicates with the tension bar. This is known to fail, especially in extreme heat. In fact, the rotation sensor was the subject of a technical service bulletin from BMW. Contact your local trained Bimmer service expert to properly diagnose this problem and see if it is covered by the technical service bulletin.
